WBC heavyweight titleholder Oleg Maskaev successfully defended his crown against Peter Okhello. In the first ever heavyweight title fight in Russia, Maskaev won a clear unanimous decision.
Two of the judges scored it 120-107, while the third saw it 118-109. Maskaev (34-5, 26 KOs) scored a knockdown in the 10th round, but could not finish Okhello (18-5, 16 KOs). Maskaev won the WBC title in a rematch with Hasim Rahman in August. In a closely contested bout, Maskaev outlasted his opponent and stopped Rahman in the 12th and final round. The two first met in 1999 when Maskaev knocked him out in the eighth round in Atlantic City. Maskaev now plans to face IBF champ Wladimir Klitschko in a 2007 unification bout.
